我还在疑惑开头一个小小的案件怎么撑得起一本书，但没有在上面花太多笔墨就接着描写孩子们的生活，我那时丝毫没有怀疑到他们身上。这是与其他推理小说不同之处，其他的可能是以侦探的视角追踪蛛丝马迹，云里雾里，虚虚实实，甚至有些作者会在中途挑战读者——线索已全部给出，你知道凶手是谁吗。而白夜行是以凶手的生活经历为主，桐原一步步成为冷漠心狠手辣的人，凶手是谁已很明了。
结局我以为会是那个警察掌握了种种线索之后把桐原抓起来，雪穗被当众揭穿真面目。可是这样就落入俗套，东野圭吾是再引出一条暗线，桐原是为了雪穗而将恋童癖的父亲杀死。可恨之人也有他可怜之处，增加了人物的复杂性。
结尾也很值得玩味，与自己共生的桐原死了，雪穗先是像人偶一样面无表情推卸责任，最后连头也没回。这样处理真的很妙啊，雪穗已经伪装了很多年，这种习惯刻入了骨子里，所以当一直守护自己替代太阳的人死在面前也没有歇斯底里，甚至没有哭还习惯性推卸责任，而头也没回这句话是怕自己会难过还是不敢面对。在这里戛然而止刚刚好，会让人情不自禁想以后会怎样，而若直接揭穿就失去了遐想的空间了。
